What Backing is Right for Your Custom Embroidered Patch?

Custom embroidered patches can be ordered in just about any shape you can imagine, and are available with several types of backing. Which backing style is right for your custom patches? That depends on how you expect to use them.

A standard twill sew-on surface is the basic backing. It’s a good, economical choice, ready to be sewn onto any garment. A 100 percent embroidered patch won’t really have a backing per se, because the twill will be entirely covered in stitching.

Plastic backing makes the standard backing stronger, and is very popular in the service industry. The entire back of the patch is sealed in plastic, ready to be sewn onto a garment.

Optional iron-on backing enables easy installation of your custom embroidered patches in only seconds. Iron-on patches can be applied to any non-stretch fabric that can safely be ironed at medium heat.

For a more permanent application, you also can use iron-on backing to hold your custom embroidered patch in place while you sew the perimeter of the patch to the garment.

Another possibility is Velcro backing, which is especially popular with military units. This is the perfect backing if you need patches that can be removed and reapplied. One side of the Velcro is on the patch, while the other side gets sewn onto the garment. For added patch durability, patches can be removed before laundering the garment.

For temporary and short-term applications, tape backing is ideal. Just peel and stick! When it comes time to remove the patch, just peel it off.

A hot cut border is best for custom shapes and for when you don’t want to sacrifice detail. Patches are laser cut for a sharp, clean edge. A hot cut border is recommended for iron-on backing, because unlike the merrowed style, it allows the adhesive to extend all the way to the edge of the patch.
